Have the students heard of a "challenge" trial, and if so have they considered the ethics of such an experiment?
the total number of cases, 1 million in the united states, is the most striking to me
Dr. Patricia Thomas
the low number of tests in the US
Definitely the testing statistic - the other numbers are scientifically explainable, but the testing is just a failure of government
14 day incubation period. Anxiety gets to people and it just hinders people
I am struck that since the U.S. population is 300m and there are 1m cases and ~50k deaths that seems like kind of a low number of cases/deaths in order to shut down the entire country.
the number of days since the first stay at home order is most striking to me
Number of deaths in U.S. ~6% death rate (of all U.S. cases)
Lack of available testing
lack of testing
the total number of deaths—when thinking about the horror of each one of those experiences on the person involved and their family members, the scale of all this is just absolutely insane.
1/1 infection rate in combination with the 46 days since stay at home - want to know how long the stabilization period compares to other countries
though is testing necessarily a good thing at this point?
Dr. Patricia Thomas
That’s quite the model!
The United States accounts for 60% of Global pharmaceutical Research and Development
How much can we do without the profit incentive though?
We can do a lot as long as the researchers' costs are covered. Edward Jenner was awarded the equivalent of about $2 million by the British Parliament for his work. This was specifically because he did NOT work at his private practice as he was developing his smallpox vaccine.
i would just like to point out that jonas salk never patented his polio vaccine
Dr. Patricia Thomas
Should we lower our requirements for a vaccine in the case of a crisis? Is it worth it to take that 1/1,000,000 chance?
^ same goes for whole cell vaccines vs acellular ones– what are your thoughts on forgoing some regulations in order to create a more universally effective vaccine?
(in general, not just for covid-19)
I have been here for 10 seconds and it is already the best SEGL TV segment of all time.
Alvin, what's your source for this? That seems like a lowball...
Are you just counting the current wave? Or are you forecasting into the future?
This is epic.
PubMed is generally reliable. It's the NIH website that began long ago as the "Index Medicus." People all over the world use this site and its data.
Alvin, are you drawing a line between infections and exposure?
With the 5% rate
none of the above?
alvin, how could you trick us like this?
i fell betrayed
that isn't how a trick question works!
Quotation from Alvin Fridie: “Teachers lie all the time.”
I thought the answer was pickling #JonasNora
Alvin's most used verbs: "Talking" and "Harassing"
the answer is ALWAYS pickling
Wayne, what is the Latin word for “pickling”?
quarantine is perfect for pickling
Carthago delenda est
carthago delenda est
two distinct issues: how they isolated people, and how they did or did not report numbers
Radio Free Asia: JIANGXI, HUBEI–“Angry Residents Overturn Police Van During Bridge Clash” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bn8SkrNi8ZY&feature=emb_title
Alvin, I can speak a bit on that issues of whether to put everybody into isolation or not.
#2 Getting lead out of paint. That’s the one I cite to my colleagues.
wait, you think lead regulations are a bad thing?
As invasive as the practices of South Korea and China are, all the models I've seen show that contact tracing is way, way more efficient
To the point where it almost kills pandemics immediately
is having to pay for parking a violation of individual freedoms?
My supervisor is named Pericles...
*Haha no, lead regulation is a form of government restriction that I consider positive, and impossible without the lead of a government agency! The government is excellent at eliminating the corporate prisoner’s dilemma, and that’s what I bring up when my coworkers get ahead of themselves. Alvin wasn’t going exactly where I thought he was going, so this comment wasn’t as relevant as I thought…
mia i agree with that
Guys, my wife Sydney was quoted in the NYT today: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/30/climate/clean-energy-loans-coronavirus-trump.html
To quote you Noah: "This is epic."
So sorry we can’t clone Alvin for South Africa…

What are the different ways Covid will affect those of lower Socio-Economic status? What can we expect life to look like after all of this?

what should be prioritized– immediate steps to mitigate the crisis, or larger, slower-moving steps towards real reform?
Manavi, who did that stained glass transom window behind you?
are there people here for whom you don’t have warm and fuzzy feelings, alvin?
I’m the only one Alvin puts up with.
If anyone wants to take a deeper look into the process of simulating epidemics, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxAaO2rsdIs
happy to see you too, alvin
That sounds awesome
I mean, if you choose to host a criminal justice/mass incarceration discussion… I wrote like two op-eds and a research brief.
Thanks, Nikki and Manavi!
